Gold prices settled above $1,600 an ounce, a record high, on European and US debt concern.

Safe haven demand propelled gold for August delivery up $12.30 to settle at a record $1,602.40 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold touched an intra-day record high of $1,607.90 an ounce.

Gold futures have enjoyed 10 consecutive days of gains as traders look to traditional safe haven investments amid deepening concern about government debt.

Meanwhile US crude oil settled 1.4% lower on Monday on concern about Europe's debt crisis and the US' debt ceiling.
